Michelle Obama's Princeton Undergrad Thesis, Alas, Is On The Web

Michelle's Thesis is perhaps the most pitiful excuse I've ever seen for an undergraduate thesis composition. And the sad part is, she worked very hard at it. I have just scanned the entire 225 page thesis - One can just imagine the expression on her faculty advisor's face, when he (yes, it was a he - Professor Walter Wallace) began reading it. Her thesis is, in a word, awful. From almost any angle - content, scope, layout, punctuation, syntax, verb tense, to the curious stretching of maybe a (generous) 50 page composition, to 225 pages! It was stretched in every conceivable way, from ridiculously wide top, bottom, and side margins, to double, even triple spaces between words. In places single pages hold a single word, or a single line or number. Affirmative action, in action.

Dinesh D'Souza has more to say on Michelle, and what her thesis reveals. Here's an excerpt from his article,

Michelle Obama's Inferiority Complex

Consider the case of Michelle Obama. She was raised in a two-parent, middle-class family. She applied to one of America's top universities, Princeton, and was admitted. Of this experience, Michelle says on the stump, "All my life I have confronted people who had a certain expectation of me. Every step of the way, there has [sic] been people telling me what I couldn't do. When I applied to Princeton, they said: you can't go there, your test scores aren't high enough."

Which is all very moving, except that her test scores weren't high enough. Michelle Obama is part of the affirmative action generation of above-average but far-from-stellar performers who were granted preferential admission to America's most elite institutions.

Michelle notes that she graduated with honors in her major. Again, the problem is that her undergraduate thesis is on the web. You might expect that she wrote about Shakespeare's sonnets or the political evolution of W.E.B. Du Bois. Well, no. Essentially Michelle Obama wrote about the problems of being a black woman at an Ivy League university.

Here is a typical passage: "By actually working with the Black lower class or within their communities as a result of their ideologies, a separationist may better understand the desparation of their situation and feel more hopeless about a resolution as opposed to an integrationist who is ignorant to their plight."

Alas, the grammar is all wrong here. More than once, the tenses are garbled. People are ignorant "of" the plight of the lower class, not ignorant "to" their plight. And"desparation" should be spelled "desperation." To wreak so much havoc on the English language in one sentence, without conveying anything of substance, is perhaps deserving of a prize. Is this what her professors were thinking when they granted her honors? Whatever the Obamorons say, let's remember that that these are not mere typos; they reflect an estranged relationship to the English language. Moreover they appear not in an off-the-cuff transcript but in a thesis that is supposed to reflect the culmination of one's college career.
What her thesis also reveals is the quandary of some (notice I didn't say all ) affirmative action students who have been favored with an opportunity to gain a first-rate education, but who will not admit they didn't gain admission on their own merits. Rather, they have been graduated, not through exemplary performance, but in spite of exceptionally poor performance. In Michelle's Obama's case, she holds that it was her own determination and exceptional scholarship which propelled her to graduate "with Honors".

Here's another typical entry: "Attending Princeton has probably forced [black alumni] to compete intellectually with Whites more than with Blacks and, thus, they have probably become more familiar with Whites intellectually, but in other activities they are likely to have gained familiarity with Whites if they did not spend time with Whites in other activities besides intellectual ones[.]" (p49) Wait. What?

How old was this woman when she wrote this? Sheesh. I'm thinking affirmative action started long before her admittance to Princeton.

If one may judge her level of scholarship from the quality and content of her undergraduate thesis, then she should consider herself fortunate that she got past first semester of her freshman year. No one who is white, man or woman, could possibly have squeaked by without a better command than hers of the English language. Maybe in a community college, but not at Princeton. Obviously, gratitude is not her long suit.

I most certainly agree with D'Souza's contention that she does have a serious inferiority complex, and further, that she will not stop in her efforts to prove to the world that she, Michelle Obama, stands head and shoulders over the white middle class, which she holds with extreme distrust and resentment. The platform upon which she will stand is a gallows of moral superiority, from which she can begin the awesome task of disenfranchising the undeserving white majority. Perhaps, in the weeks to come, we will begin to see who is really the driving force behind Barack Obama's pursuit of the White (wink, wink) House. It is easy to see how the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's message struck a chord in malcontent Michelle's jealous heart.

Notice the Jackie O look.

If I know anything about human nature, the kind of inferiority feelings which Michelle Obama lives with daily will not give her peace, will not be assuaged by any personal achievement, because she will secretly, perversely hold herself up to the whites whom she distrusts and despises. A look, a word, any nuanced meaning extracted in common discourse will confirm what she suspects: she is not as good as whites. Barack Obama may have stepped back from Wright's rants, but I suspect that separationist [apparently a new word for separatist ] Michelle Obama needs the good Rev. rather more to fuel her fire of discontent. And remember, when a woman's unhappy, everyone's unhappy. A man, by his nature, will do most anything to keep a woman happy...

So yeah, this black couple who aspires to the White House, and who has already put the white majority on notice, should not get a free pass, should not be allowed to finish the job of putting our country under a totalitarian government.

Affirmative action must stop short of the White House.
